Jill Scott (n e Joyce Scott) was born to her mother on 4th April, 1972. As an only girl She was also raised by her maternal grandmother. Scott attended her school, the Philadelphia High School for Girls. Following her graduation her school, she went to Temple University. Along with two job opportunities, Scott was also a teacher in Temple University. She hoped to become an high school English teacher. However, her dream ended up being a short-lived dream when she quit school after three years of studies and was a teachers' aide. The path she took to her career started as a spoken-word performer, performing her pieces live at poetry readings. Her next collaboration was together with Amir Quest Love Thompson from The Roots. You Got Me was co-written by the two. Through the Roots show, she revealed herself as a musician. Afterward she secured collaborations with stars such as Eric Benet Will Smith and Common. She gained more experience on stage as she was a part of the Canada tour of the Broadway show Rent. She was signed by the label's first artist.
